Grand Rapids, Michigan

Made on a
shelf, in a
purple city.

Telly Monster Myco is a small operation in Grand Rapids that makes one thing properly: a mushroom block that is completely finished before it leaves the building.

The Blue Bridge, Grand Rapids, at dusk
01  /  The palette

Sampled, not chosen.

Violet sky, amber horizon, gold reflected in dark water. Every colour on this site was pulled out of two photographs of Michigan at dusk: the Blue Bridge at the moment the sodium lamps come on, and Detroit at blue hour with the skyline still burning.

The monster on the seal was drawn in the same colours, years earlier and by somebody who had never seen the two photographs. So the city and the brand share one palette, and the whole site is built out of it. That is also why it is dark: the photographs are dark, and washing them onto a white page would have thrown them away.

02  /  The method

Finished before it ships.

A kit is parts and a job. A block is a finished thing. Substrate is mixed to field capacity, sterilised, inoculated and then grown out here until it is solid white through, which takes weeks.

Only then is it sealed and boxed. Everything a kit asks you to do has already been done, which is the entire reason there is nothing for you to do. It also means the block leaves here alive and on a clock, which is why they only go out Monday to Wednesday.

Two lines, kept apart

Everything on this site is a culinary block, legal in all fifty states.

There is a separate research line of dormant spore material for microscopy and taxonomy. It is 21 and over, it is not shipped everywhere, it is not a kit, and it deliberately shares no language with this one.
