The colours on this site come from two photographs. The first is the Blue Bridge in Grand Rapids at the exact moment the sky goes violet and the sodium lamps come on gold in the water. The second is Detroit at blue hour, where the horizon is still burning orange under a stack of cold blue towers.
Violet sky, amber horizon, gold reflected in dark water. Which, entirely by accident, is the same set of colours the monster on the seal was drawn in.
So the city and the brand share one palette, and everything on this site is built out of it. It is the reason the site is dark: the photographs are dark, and washing them out onto a white page would have thrown the whole thing away.
